My research findings uncover the many ways that Asian women transcended into leadership propositions in high-profile companies. In Finding 1: The evolution of personal values Into leadership style, Asian women navigated the complexity of their organizations while maintaining and honoring the multifaceted aspects of their identities. In Finding 2: Leveraging support and guidance from the community, many of the women received guidance and support from others throughout their lives. During their climb into leadership roles, they often relied on the wisdom of mentors, managers, and role models to help them navigate their careers.

Numerous barriers prohibit people from historically underrepresented communities from contributing fully to the workplace. My research findings uncover the many ways that Asian women transcended into leadership positions in high-profile companies.

Previously in Finding 1: The evolution of personal values Into leadership style, Asian women navigated the complexity of their organizations while maintaining and honoring the multifaceted aspects of their identities. The three prominent values that emerged were: 1) caring for others, 2) exhibiting a strong work ethic, and 3) being a continuous learner.

With guidance from mentors, role models, and peers, the Asian women took on new opportunities that further developed their competence and experience.

Finding 2: Leveraging support and guidance from the community

Next, in Finding 2: Leveraging support and guidance from the community, many of the women received guidance and support from others throughout their lives. As new immigrants to the U.S., they sought support from their teachers, tutors, parents, and family members as they adapted to the new culture. They continued to seek out help when they entered the workforce.

They needed to have a clear career map laid out. But instead, with guidance from mentors, role models, and peers, they took on new opportunities that further developed their competence and experience. Taking on new projects and assignments enhanced their visibility to those in positions of organizational power and influence. During their climb into leadership roles, they often relied on the wisdom of mentors, managers, and role models to help them navigate their careers.

Application of Research Findings

One caveat is that these findings may not apply to all of you. The values identified here might not directly align with your values. Your values are a reflection of your upbringing and lived experiences.

The support and guidance from others will be different for each of you. For example, I never had a formal mentor during the early part of my career. I had role models I looked up to, but no one to go to who provided direct career guidance. I relied heavily on observing others who expertly navigated the corporate environment. I listened to what they said and how they said things. This helped me craft a communication style that works for me, one where I listen deeply for meaning and, when sharing my ideas, provide as much context as possible.

With that said, there are three actions you can take away and apply to your own lives. I have done a version of this exercise in workshops with hundreds of people, which helps you gain clarity and perspective about yourself and your career.

Your exercise: Identify your support network

Completing this exercise will help you to identify your support network and re-engage with those who have helped you in your career.

  1. Take a look at the high points and low points exercise.
  2. List the names of people who helped you achieve your high points.
  3. Then write down the names of people who helped you get out of your low points.
  4. Once you’ve identified those key people, reach out to them (if you can find them.)
  5. Tell them the positive impact they’ve made in your career and life.
  6. Stay in touch with them. Relationships matter in life and work. By cultivating these key relationships, you are building a support network that will help you in times of need. You never know how your paths will cross again in the future.
